CHAPTER 10 – LEARN TO LIVE IN THE PRESENT MOMENT
To aid us in learning how to live in the present moment, Richard Carslon wrote the following:
Many people live as if life were a dress rehearsal for some later date. It isn’t. In fact, no one has a guarantee that he or she will be here tomorrow. Now is the only time we have, and the only time that we have any control over.
How ironic that Dr. Carlson chose to write these words because as fate would have it, he left this planet all to soon, leaving a wife and children behind. At the precipice of his career he wrote several insightful books to help others learn to live in the moment. To live a life focused on the here and now; valuing relationships and time shared together, while de-emphasizing the irritating, unimportant matters in life. It’s as if he had a subconscious premonition about his own mortality. His kind and gentle words reflect his sincerity and passion to help us improve our lives. He simply wanted us to live life in the present, live in the moment!
Previously in Chapter 9, we learned how to stress less and enjoy life more by allowing others to have the glory. We took the focus off ourselves and gave the “talking feather” to someone else, allowing them to have the spotlight while we paid attention to them. We practiced saying “That’s Fantastic!”
For me this was an easy exercise, not because I always pay attention and absorb myself in another’s words and thoughts, but because I don’t. I became very aware that this was my assignment. All to often I find my attention drifting off while the conversation going on around me fades to the background. Maybe I have a form of attention deficit disorder? I don’t mean to be uninterested but I do struggle. So now I purposely bite my tongue, listening intently and wait until it’s my turn to return the serve…so to speak. I actually enjoy being in a conversation and not outside of it looking in. I apologize to anyone who has observed my eyes glaze over, because you really are important to me
This brings us to the focus of this week’s chapter, living in the moment. How many times do you find yourself projecting your thoughts about what might happen in the future? How many times do you try to put a plan in place just in case this or that may happen? An act in futility don’t you think? While you were wasting your energy trying to control things that may never be, guess what?, you missed the moment! What are you missing when your focus and attention is in the perceived future, and not engaged in the activity and people who are with you right now? You are missing the moment(s) that make your memories. That moment created for you to experience, is gone for good.
THIS WEEKS ADVENTURE ASSIGNMENT
Practice living in the moment. Push any fears and doubts about what tomorrow may bring out of your thoughts and give it your best effort to enjoy where you are …right here, right now. We are now ten weeks into this adventure. I hope that you are learning and growing, and are incorporating the Don’t Sweat philosophy measures into your daily lives. I hope the butterfly effect is widening its path as you keep flapping your wings for a greater good!
